Maryland Prepster Signs With Lady Paladin Soccer Team

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman head women's soccer coach Brian Lee announced the signing of Kathy Gaertner, a standout midfielder from Columbia, Md., to a national letter of intent Tuesday.

Gaertner helped lead River Hill to the Maryland State Championship in 1997 while being named Howard County Player-of-the-Year. She is a product of the same club program that produced Furman standouts Liz Bielefeld and Sarah Tollick. Bielefeld leaves as FurmanÕs all-time leading scorer this season and Tollick returns as one of FurmanÕs top returnees in 1998. Gaertner and Tollick played together for four years on the Columbia Magic.

Gaertner was a member of the Maryland Olympic Development Program (ODP) team and was a four-time all-county prep selection and two-time all-state selection while at River Hill.

"Kathy will be a great addition to our program," said head coach Brian Lee. "She has a lot of experience at a high level of club soccer."

Gaertner becomes the sixth prepster to sign with Furman this spring.
