Furman Blanks Chattanooga

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Freshman Kaye Brownlee played a part in all five of the Lady Paladin's goals as she scored a goal and tied a school record with four assists en route to a 5-0 victory over Chattanooga on senior day at Eugene Stone Stadium.

Brownlee recorded her first assist of the match as she won a ball at midfield, fed Kathy Gaertner in the left corner who crossed to Melissa Sutton, who put the Lady Paladins up 1-0 at the 4:16 mark in the first half. Brownlee then took care of business herself as she won a ball and dribbled through several Moc defenders to put Furman up 2-0 at the 27:34 mark.

Kathy Gaertner scored the first of her two goals early in the second half as she scored off assists from Sutton and Brownlee at the 51:54 mark. Sutton's assist put her one point ahead of Leah Versteegen as Furman's all-time leading scorer. Brownlee created the Lady Paladins fourth goal as her shot was deflected by Moc keeper Wendie von Peters and finished by Tara Brexel. One minute later, an almost identical play occurred as Brownlee's shot off a Sarah Tollick pass reflected off the cross bar and was finished off by Gaertner.

Furman attempted 33 shots on goal to Chattanooga's seven. Moc keeper Wendie von Peters recorded an impressive 13 saves.

"It's good to end the regular season with this kind of win," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "We are going to have to start playing a whole lot better, though, if we expect to win the Southern Conference Tournament and make the NCAA Tournament."

Furman concludes the regular season 11-7, 7-1 SoCon, while Chattanooga concludes their season 1-16, 0-8 SoCon. Furman be the second seed in the Southern Conference Tournament and will host seventh seeded College of Charleston on Tuesday at 5:30.
