Furman Rallies To Edge UNCW

GREENVILLE, SC ­ The Furman women's soccer team rallied from a 3-1 deficit with eight minutes to play to edge UNC Wilmington 4-3 Sunday at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium as freshman Kathy Gaertner scored the game-winner six minutes into the first overtime period.

Furman trailed UNCW 2-0 at the intermission despite outshooting the Seahawks 18-10 in the first half of play. Freshman Melissa Turner finally got the Paladins on the board with a goal off a Kaye Brownlee indirect kick in the 63rd minute. The Seahawks then responded with a goal from Kim Scheurger just eight minutes later to increase their lead to 3-1.

UNC Wilmington held the 3-1 led for 14 minutes until the Furman rally began as Nicole Malseed scored off a Kathy Gaertner assist. Melissa Sutton then forced overtime with a lofting goal to the upper corner of the goal with 2:24 remaining in regulation. Gaertner then scored the game-winner off a long pass from Tracy Austin and a header from Leah Versteegen six minutes into the first overtime period.

"I am relieved to come away from this match with a victory," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "It was nice to finally be able to score some goals after having so many opportunities in the first half."

Furman improves to 6-3 on the season and are riding a four match winning streak. UNCW falls to 4-6 on the season.
