Furman Women Fall 2-1 To UNCG In OT

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- UNC Greensboro clinched the top seed at the 1998 Southern Conference Women's Soccer Tournament Tuesday with a 2-1 overtime victory over Furman at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium.

With the victory, UNCG improves to 7-0 in the conference and clinches the top seed, while Furman falls to 6-1. The Paladins will be the second seed in the conference tournament. UNCG's Ashley Horton hooked a shot into the side of the Furman goal 14 minutes into the first overtime period to give the Lady Spartans the victory.

Furman scored just 3:48 into the match as freshman Kathy Gaertner scored off a double assist from Leah Versteegen and Tara Brexel. The Lady Paladins held onto their lead for the rest of the first half and five minutes into the second period. It was then, at the 50:02 mark that UNCG's Jenny Moore evened the score at 1-1 off an assist from Pa'tra Glavin.

Neither team was able to score again in regulation, as Furman outshot UNCG 7-5 in the second half. The Lady Paladins had two corner kicks in the last minute of regulation, but failed to score as Melissa Turner's shot was cleared by a Spartan defender in the last 30 seconds.

"This is a tough loss to take," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "Our girls were excited and ready and wanted that title of Southern Conference Champion. We played well, but not quite well enough to win. We hope to have another chance at then in about 10 days for the SoCon Tournament Title."

Furman concludes the regular season on Saturday against Chattanooga and will host the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament next Tuesday, November 4 against College of Charleston at 5:30 p.m. Furman will also host the semifinals and finals of the 1998 SoCon Tournament on November 7 and 8.
