Furman Women's Soccer Down High Point 6-1

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman women's soccer team won its home opener Friday night as freshman Kaye Brownlee scored two goals and had one assist in a 6-1 victory over High Point at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium.

Brownlee broke a scoreless tie with five minutes remaining in the first half off a pass from Leah Versteegen and began a scoring frenzy that featured four goals in less than 11 minutes. Just two minutes after Brownlee's goal, Leah Versteegen connected off a Lindsey Facciolo assist to give Furman a 2-0 lead. Brownlee added her second goal of the game just three minutes later off a penalty kick to give Furman the 3-0 halftime lead.

The Lady Paladins continued the second half right where they left off the first, with a Lindsey Facciolo goal off a Melissa Turner assist in the game's 50th minute.

After a Melissa Sutton goal made the score 5-0, High Point added its lone goal on a nice shot from 20 yards out from Emelie Eschedor. Nicole Malseed added Furman's sixth goal with a shot from just inside of midfield as time expired.

"I was pleased with our performance today," said Furman head coach Brian Lee. "I was especially pleased with play of the freshman. This was a good win for us and hopefully it will get us back on the right track."

Furman improves to 1-1, while High Point falls to 0-2 on the season. The Lady Paladins will face Presbyterian Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Eugene Stone Stadium on Furman's campus.
