Furman Defeats Georgia Southern; Brownlee, Versteegen Set Records

GREENVILLE, S.C. --   The Furman women's soccer team remained unbeaten in the conference and increased it's winning streak to seven matches as Leah Versteegen recorded her second career hat trick in a 3-1 victory over Georgia Southern Friday night at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium.

Versteegen scored her first goal of the match as she sailed a ball over the Eagle goalkeeper from 20 yards out.  Melissa Turner and Kaye Brownlee were credited with assists on the goal.  Brownlee's assist was her 11th of the season, a new single season school record.

Versteegen added her second goal eight minutes later on a header off assists from Sarah Tollick and Melissa Turner to put the Paladins up 2-0 at the intermission.  Versteegen became Furman's all-time leading scorer with the goal.  She now has 25 career goals and 20 career assists for 70 points.

Georgia Southern's Amber Wilson cut the Furman lead to 2-1 at the 57:26 mark off an assist by Tara Chaisson.  Versteegen, though, quieted the Georgia Southern rally as she knocked in her third goal of the night off an assist from Brownlee.

"We played a great game," said Furman head coach Brian Lee.  "Georgia Southern is one of the best teams in the conference and our girls rose to the occasion."

The win improves Furman to 9-3 overall, 5-0 in the Southern Conference.  Georgia Southern falls to 6-7 overall, 4-1 in the Southern Conference.  Furman travels to Appalachian State for a 1 p.m. match this Sunday.
