Furman Women's Soccer Rolls Past College of Charleston

GREENVILLE, S.C. --   The Furman women's soccer team increased itís winning streak to five consecutive matches as the Lady Paladins defeated the College of Charleston 7-0 Friday night at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium.

Furman's leading scorer Kaye Brownlee opened the scoring for the Lady Paladins just 1:27 into match with a high cross that sailed over the Cougar defender's head.  Leah Versteegen added the second goal of the match as she was one vs. one with the goalkeeper after receiving a nice pass from Brownlee.  Sophomore Nicole Malseed increased the Lady Paladin lead to 3-0 at the intermission off assists by Kathy Gaertner and Kaye Brownlee.

The Lady Paladins continued the second half exactly where they left off the first with four additional goals.  Leah Versteegen added her second goal of the match off an assist from Sarah Tollick at the 56:15 mark.  Freshman Kathy Gaertner then scored two goals in an eight minute span, while senior Cynthia Bankston added her first goal of the season to give Furman the 7-0 victory.

"We played a great game," said Furman head coach Brian Lee.  "We came out ready to play at the beginning of the match and never let up."

The 7-0 victory marks the largest margin of victory ever for the Lady Paladins in a Southern Conference match.  Furmanís current five match winning streak ties the all-time record set in 1997.  The win improves Furman to 7-3 overall, 3-0 in the Southern Conference.  College of Charleston falls to 2-8, 1-4 in the Southern Conference.  Furmanís next match will be at Wofford this Tuesday at 7 p.m.
