Wolpack Squeak Past Lady Paladins in Umbro Kickoff Classic

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman women's soccer team fell 1-0 to N.C. State Friday at Eugene Stone Stadium in the Umbro Kickoff Classic.

The Wolfpack's Jane Hampton scored the game's only goal early in the first half off a Stacy Hampton pass. It was the lone sour point for the Lady Paladins as they staved off numerous Wolfpack attacks throughout the game. Lady Paladin Goalkeeper Jen McNutt put on a show with three diving saves. McNutt finished with 9 saves on the match. In the end, the constant pressure was too much as Furman was unable to take advantage of the goal-scoring oportunities they had.

"We played a tremendous game," Furman head coach Brian Lee said. "The one defensive breakdown cost us the match, but we hung right in there with a great North Carolina State team. Jen McNutt played fabulous and the freshman came up big just as I expected. A lot of credit goes the State though, they moved the ball great."

In other action in the Umbro Kickoff Classic, Charleston Southern downed Elon 2-1. Charleston Southern will face N.C. State Saturday at 5:00, while Furman will host Elon at 7:30.

Scoring:

Shots on Goal: Furman -- 8; N.C. State -- 20.

Corner Kicks: Furman -- 6; N.C. State -- 6.

Saves: Furman -- 9; N.C. State -- 1.

Fouls: Furman -- 9; N.C. State -- 8.
