Furman Women's Soccer Wins Fifth Straight

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Leah Versteegen recorded a goal and an assist as Furman defeated Jacksonville 3-2 Sunday at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium.

The Lady Paladins got on the board first as Liz Bielefeld nailed a direct kick past substitute goalkeeper Karen Novak from 20-yards out at the 11:44 mark. Leah Versteegen then added Furman's second goal off a Sarah Tollick assist just one minutes later at the 12:48 mark.

Just as it seemed Furman would cruise to an easy victory, the Dolphins came back with a goal one minute into the second half as Stine Kloster passed a ball by Lady Paladin goalkeeper Laura Meisenheimer. FurmanÕs Melissa Sutton then scored her sixth goal of the season to put the match away off a Leah Versteegen assist. Jacksonville gained another goal with just under two minutes to play as Rebecca Hallman scored on a penalty kick.

"It is great to get a win under our belt," Furman head coach Brian Lee said. "It was a tough match and Jacksonville played well. We need to step it up next week if we are going to continue our winning streak."

The Lady Paladins are currently riding a record five-match winning streak that began September 28 against Florida State. Furman is now 9-4-1 on the season. Jacksonville falls to 7-6. Furman will host Wofford tomorrow at 7:00 in the continuation of a September 10 match.
