Furman Women's Soccer Defeats Florida State

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Lady Paladin freshman Sarah Tollick scored the game-winner from five-yards out with just over a minute to play as Furman upset Florida State 2-1 Sunday at Eugene Stone Stadium on a rain-soaked field.

Tollick set up Furman's first goal at the 40:30 mark in the first half with a high cross that senior Holly Aure put in the corner of the goal. Furman's lead stood for most of the second half until Kasey McCallÕs shot rebounded off Furman goalkeeper Jen McNutt and the cross bar before settling in the back of the net at the 81:30 mark in the second half.

The game-winner came with 1:05 to play in the game as Melissa Sutton's shot on an open goal died in a puddle five-feet in front of the goal. Tollick then charged the goal and knocked it in before the Seminole defense could clear the ball.

"This was a big win for our program," Furman head coach Brian Lee said. "The girls played great today, especially with these field conditions. This is certainly one of the biggest wins in our four-year history. Knocking off an ACC school helps give instant recognition our program."

Furman's victory ends a three-game losing streak and improves the Lady Paladins' record to 5-4-1 overall, 1-1 Southern Conference. Florida State falls to 3-6, 0-5 in the ACC. The Lady Paladins travel to Lynchburg, Va. to face Liberty Wednesday at Noon.
