GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Davidson's Angie Boyer scored on the Wildcats fifth penalty kick as the Davidson women's soccer team advances to the second round of the Southern Conference tournament with a 2-1 victory in penalty kicks.
Davidson scored the game's first goal as Kate McNight connected on a goal at the 82:27 mark in the second half. With time running out in the match, Furman's Leah Versteegen scored with nine seconds remaining in regulation off a shot that hit the crossbar and bounced in for the tying goal.
The match then proceeded to two 15-minute overtime periods as neither team was able to claim the victory. The Lady Paladins outshot Davidson 12-2 in the two overtime periods as the Wildcats played a man down after Kelly Rennick was flagged with a second yellow card, causing her to exit the match.
Davidson connected on their first attempt in the penalty kicks as Carrie Porath put Davidson ahead 1-0. Furman missed on their first four attempts, but goalkeeper Jen McNutt kept the Lady Paladins alive with three saves setting up the final round. Senior Christina Franks then scored the first penalty kick goal for Furman on the Lady Paladin's fifth try, but Boyer connected for Davidson to advance the Wildcats.
Furman finished its season 12-6-2, its most win in school history. Davidson will advance to plat UNC Greensboro Saturday in Davidson in the semifinals of the conference tournament. Davidson is 4-12-3.
