GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Freshman Jill Braley scored the game-winner with less than 4 minutes left in the second overtime period as the Furman women's soccer team defeated Davidson 2-1 at Eugene Stone Stadium Wednesday.
Davidson's Kelly Rennick broke a scoreless tie early in the second half off an Amy Kanoff corner kick to put the Wildcats in front. Furman freshman Sarah Tollick gave Furman new life as she scored off an assist from eventual hero Jill Braley with just under four minutes remaining in regulation to send the match to overtime.
After the first overtime went scoreless, Furman was able to survive a barrage of Wildcat shots early in the second overtime period until Braley won the match for Furman. Braley's goal came off a cross by Melissa Sutton as Braley placed the ball in the far corner of the goal, just past the hands of Davidson goalkeeper Allison Nozneski.
Furman goalkeeper Jen McNutt made numerous spectacular saves to keep the Lady Paladins alive. She finished with ten saves on the match.
"That was an incredible game," Furman head coach Brian Lee said. "It is a big win for us because it guarantees us a home match in the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament."
The win vaults Furman to 12-6-1 overall, 4-3 SoCon, while Davidson falls to 4-11-2, 3-3-1 SoCon. Furman will host the first round of the Southern Conference Tournament Tuesday November 4 at 7:00 against an opponent to be decided later.
