GREENVILLE, SC -- The 14th ranked Furman men's soccer team blew a 1-0 lead with less than five minutes play as the Paladins lost 2-1 to South Florida in the Diadora Spinx Furman Invitational at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium on Friday night.
The Paladins scored early as Scott Hoch headed home a Vosh Villalobos free
kick at the 15:31 mark of the first half to put the Paladins on top early. Furman
held that lead with a strong offensive attack and a stingy defense before giving
way to two late USF goals.
South Florida's Hunter West evened the score at 1-1 off an assist from Drew
Helm at the 85:27 mark. West then connected on his second goal in less than
five minutes as he scored the game-winner with only 38 seconds remaining in
regulation.
"I am extremely disappointed that we were not able to finish this match,"
said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "A good team knows how to close out
matches and obviously don't know how to do that. We have to be tougher than
we showed tonight."
Furman falls to 0-3 on the season, while South Florida improves to 2-0-1. The Paladins will host St. Louis, a 2-0 winner over Clemson, at 2:30 Sunday afternoon. South Florida will take on Clemson at Noon Sunday.
