Each team was only able to manage one really strong scoring opportunity in the 110 minutes. In the 78th minute, South Carolina's Ryan Deter drilled a shot from 15 yards out, but Furman goalkeeper Alex Maslow made a diving save to knock the ball out of bounds.
With only 45 seconds remaining in the second overtime, Furman's Scott Hoch received a ball just inside the 18-yard box, but his shot was deflected by a South Carolina defender and sailed just wide of the goal for a corner kick. The Paladins were unable to muster the game-winner on the ensuing corner.
"This was a match-up of two evenly matched teams," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "I was pleased with the fact that we were able to put two halves together. But we are going to need to start generating more scoring opportunities."
The tie moves Furman to 3-6-4 on the season, while South Carolina is now 8-5-1 after a 7-0 start. Furman now has recorded four ties on the year, a new school record.
Over the last five years of the series with South Carolina, the teams have tied three times, with both Furman and USC claiming one victory each.
Furman returns to action Saturday afternoon against Southern Conference leader Davidson at 3:00 p.m. South Carolinašs next match is also against the Davidson Wildcats, on Friday, October 31.
