DAVIDSON DROPS FURMAN IN SOCON TOURNEY 3-0

CHARLESTON, SC -- Davidson downed Furman 3-0 in the semifinals of the Gift of Life/Southern Conference Men’s Soccer Championships at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, S.C., Saturday evening. Nick Hansell led the offensive attack by notching two unassisted goals for the Wildcats.

After a flurry of shots and saves in the Furman end, Hansell opened the scoring when he buried a rebound goal in the 13th minute. Hansell, a senior forward, scored his second goal after dribbling through the Paladin defense and beating the sprawling Paladin goalkeeper. Cass Baltz recorded the third Wildcat goal with a blast from 18 yards. The second half featured several scoring chances, but Wildcat goaltender Bart Creasman preserved the shutout by recording three impressive saves.

"It is always disappointing to end your season with a result like we had tonight," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "We have to give credit to Davidson. They are a solid team and came ready to play."

The loss ends Furman’s season and brings their final record to 6-9-4. Davidson (14-5-2) will take on the winner of the UNC Greensboro/College of Charleston game at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday. The winner of the of the Gift of Life/Southern Conference Men’s Soccer Championships will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
