CHARLESTON MEN'S SOCCER DOWNS FURMAN 2-0, SNAPS 46-MATCH CONFERENCE UNBEATEN STREAK

GREENVILLE - The College of Charleston defeated Furman men's soccer 2-0 Tuesday night at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., snapping the Paladins' NCAA record conference unbeaten streak of 46 matches.

The College of Charleston's Jeff Files scored at the 31:54 mark. Files took a pass from Tony Meyers in the box and beat the Furman defender to the inside before firing a shot by Paladin keeper Alex Maslow. The Cougars stretched the lead to 2-0 in the 80th minute when Ricardo Diaz Granados scored on a header from Sage Martina.

Furman's best chance of the night came with 23 minutes remaining when Josh Villalobos blasted a shot off of a free kick that was saved by Charleston keeper Keith Wiggans.

The Paladins managed only 8 shots on the night, while Charleston tallied 13 shots.

"We struggled to create chances tonight," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "Give Charleston a lot of credit. They are a solid team and made the most of their opportunities."

Furman's last Southern Conference loss came on November 8, 1999, when the Paladins dropped a 1-0 decision to UNC Greensboro in the Southern Conference tournament.

The win improves the College of Charleston to 7-3-2 overall and 3-2 in the Southern Conference, while Furman falls to 3-6-3 overall and 1-1-2 in league play.

Furman returns to action on Sunday when it hosts South Carolina in a 2:00p.m. contest at Eugene Stone Stadium.
