FURMAN MEN'S SOCCER SET TO HOST DIADORA/SPINX FURMAN INVITATIONAL

GREENVILLE, SC -- The Furman men's soccer team will look to pick up its first win of the 2003 season when it hosts the Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational Friday and Sunday at Eugene Stone III Soccer Stadium.

The Paladins, 0-2-0 on the season, will host South Florida on Friday at 7:30 p.m., following the tournament's opening game between Clemson and St. Louis at 5:00. The tournament concludes on Sunday as South Florida takes on Clemson at 12:00 p.m. and Furman hosts the St. Louis Billikens at 2:30.

"This weekend's tournament is another excellent opportunity for us to test ourselves against top-notch competition," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "It is also a great chance for Furman and Greenville area soccer fans to see some very competitive soccer."

Clemson enters this weekend's matches with a 1-1-0 mark. The Tigers opened the season with a win over Richmond and loss to Virginia Commonwealth last weekend in Virginia. Clemson is currently ranked 14th in the latest College Soccer News poll.

South Florida comes into the Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational with a 1-0-1 mark. The Bulls downed Florida Atlantic 4-3 in double overtime before playing to a 1-1 draw with Jacksonville. South Florida is ranked 24th in the Soccer America poll.

St. Louis, a member of C-USA, opened its season 2-0-0 after scoring victories over Akron (1-0) and national power Virginia (3-2) in its first two matches. The Billikens, ranked 9th by College Soccer News, defeated the Paladins 2-0 last season in the Nike Classic in St. Louis, Mo.

Furman opens Southern Conference play September 13, when it hosts the SoCon's newest member, Elon, in a 7:00p.m. match.
