GREENVILLE -- The 13th ranked Furman men's soccer team will host Southern Conference rival UNCG on Saturday at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium at 7:00 p.m. Admission is $4 for adults and $2 for children.
Furman will put its 34-match Southern Conference unbeaten streak on the line against its strongest conference rival on Saturday. Furman is currently one match shy of the Southern Conference record of 35 straight conference matches without a loss set by Appalachian State from 1977-1982. Furman's current 34-match streak is the fourth longest in NCAA history. Clemson owns the nation's longest at 42 matches from 1972 to 1980 in the ACC.The Paladins have beaten the Spartans five straight times, though Furman's last loss in conference play came at the hands of UNCG in the 1998 Southern Conference Championship match. Overall, Furman leads the all-time series with UNCG 7-4 and has claimed wins in seven of the last eight contests.
Since UNCG joined the league in 1997, these two teams have met for the SoCon Tournament title four out of five years and the winner of the regular season showdown has claimed the regular season title every year.
This season, Furman brings a 3-1-1 overall record and a national ranking of 13th by Soccer America. Furman has claimed wins over then 19th ranked Creighton and Butler, tied 24th ranked Bradley and dropped a 2-1 double overtime decision to fifth ranked Notre Dame.
UNCG is 3-1 on the year with wins over Mercer, South Florida, and Stetson coupled with a 3-1 loss to 10th ranked Clemson. The Spartans' Chris Goos has tallied six goals on the year and is currently tied for third in the nation in points per match. UNCG is ranked seventh in the NSCAA South Region poll.
"The Furman-UNCG match is always very entertaining," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "I expect this Saturday's match to be no exception."
It is also a match-up of two of the top coaches in NCAA Division I. Doug Allison, in his eighth season as head coach at Furman, has a 115-31-10 overall record and his winning percentage of .769 is fourth best among active coaches. Michael Parker, in his 27th season, has a 395-131-20 overall record and his winning percentage of .742 is eighth best among active coaches in Division I.
