FURMAN DEFEATS GONZAGA 2-0 AT CLEMSON/NIKE INVITATIONAL

CLEMSON, SC -- Anthony Esquivel scored his second goal of the weekend, and Alex Maslow recorded a shutout as Furman defeated Gonzaga 2-0 at the Clemson/Nike Invitational.

Furman began the scoring at the 16:42 mark as Gray Griffin cross a ball into the Gonzaga penalty box. Sergei Raad then flicked the ball to Anthony Esquivel who headed it past Bulldog goalkeeper Mike McCarthy. The goal was Esquivel's fifth of the season, and second of the tournament.

Furman scored again in the second half as Griffin sent another cross into the Gonzaga box. Clint Dempsey headed the ball across the face of the goal to McNeil Cronin who headed the ball past McCarthy at the 51:59 mark. The goal was Cronin's third of the season and second of the weekend.

Alex Maslow recorded the shutout for the Paladins as he made 5 saves.

"This was a good match," said head coach Doug Allison. "I am very pleased to get a shutout and a great out-of-conference win."

Furman returns to action on Wednesday night as it faces Appalachian State at 7:00 at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium.
