FURMAN MEN'S SOCCER OPENS SEASON WITH 3-0 WIN OVER THE CITADEL

CHARLESTON, SC -- The tenth ranked Furman men's soccer team opened its 2002 season with a 3-0 victory over The Citadel Monday as junior Scott Hoch scored two goals.

Furman took a 1-0 lead into the intermission as junior Scott Hoch tallied Furman's first goal of the season with a rifled shot at the 24:26 mark off an assist from Matt Foxhall.

Hoch added his second goal at the 52:22 mark as he took a low cross from freshman Chefik Simo and one-touched it into the goal. Sophomore Clint Dempsey added the final goal of the afternoon as he scored at the 81:36 mark after receiving a touch from Sean Murray and slotting The Citadel keeper.

"This was a good win to open the season with on the road," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "Scott Hoch played excellent today in scoring those two goals."

Furman will return to action Friday night in the Spinx/LandRover Furman Invitational at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium. Furman will take on Butler at 7:30 on Friday following the Kentucky-Creighton match-up. On Sunday, the Paladins host Creighton at 2:30, while Butler and Kentucky square off at Noon.
