FURMAN DOWNS APPALACHIAN STATE 3-2 IN OVERTIME THRILLER

GREENVILLE, SC -- Anthony Esquivel's penalty kick goal with 3:32 remaining in the second overtime period gave Furman a 3-2 victory over Appalachian State and extended its Southern Conference unbeaten streak to 37 games.

The goal was set up as Sergei Raad dribbled the ball to the endline and sent a cross over the face of the goal. Drew Moor connected with an apparent game-winning header, but an intentional handball in the penalty area was called on a Mountaineer defender. The goal was Esquivel's sixth of the season.

Appalachian State began the scoring at 20:02 in the first half as Keon McPherson beat a defender down the sideline and sent a low cross into the box. Fredrik Henriksen one-touched the ball past Furman goalkeeper Alex Maslow for his first goal of the season.

Furman tied the game in the second half at the 58:34 mark as Clint Dempsey scored his third goal of the season. Dempsey collected a deflected McNeil Cronin shot and beat Appalachian State goalkeeper Greg Brooks.

The Mountaineers regained the lead just three minutes later as Brian Fowler streaked down the middle of the field, beating three Paladin defenders and slotting the ball past Maslow.

The Paladins scored the equalizer with just over eight minutes remaining in the second half as Scott Hoch scored his sixth goal of the season. A Sergei Raad shot was blocked by a defender, and Hoch beat Brooks to the far post.

"I am glad to get a win," said head coach Doug Allison. "This was a very exciting match. Appalachian State played very well and we are glad to get another conference victory."

Esquivel's goal was his forth game-winner of the season, and he has now converted three penalty kicks in three attempts.

Furman outshot Appalachian State 22-11 on the night and took 16 corner kicks to the Mountaineers' four.

Furman improves to 8-1-1 on the season and 4-0 in the conference. Appalachian State falls to 5-2-1, 0-1.

Furman returns to action on Saturday as they travel to face No. 14 St. Louis at 7:00.
