FURMAN MEN'S SOCCER DEFEATS COASTAL CAROLINA 2-0 IN EXHIBITION MATCH

GREENVILLE, SC -- The tenth ranked Furman men's soccer team defeated Coastal Carolina 2-0 in an exhibition match at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium.

Freshman Drew Moor began the scoring at the 43:22 mark off a set corner kick piece. Freshman Josh Villalobos sent the corner to the near post where freshman Gray Griffin flicked the ball toward the far post to an oncoming Moor who headed the ball past Chanticleer goalkeeper AAron Sanders.

Senior Anthony Esquivel, the 2001 Southern Conference tournament MVP, put the match away in the 60th minute off assists from Villalobos and junior McNeil Cronin. The play was set up as Cronin placed a through ball to the corner, and Villalobos played a cross to Esquivel, who's header beat Sanders to the far post.

Coastal Carolina outshot the Paladins 15-12, but sophomores Alex Maslow and John Hanley were able to preserve the shutout.

"It is good to get a match under our belt," said head coach Doug Allison. "We still have a lot to work on, but I feel confident that we will be ready for the start of the season next Friday."

Furman opens the regular season on Friday August 30 as they travel to Charleston to face The Citadel. The Paladins are currently ranked tenth in the nation in the College Soccer News preseason poll and 21st in the NSCAA preseason poll.

Coastal Carolina begins its regular season next Friday, August 30, against Hartwick at the Virginia Commonwealth Tournament.
