FURMAN DOWNS WOFFORD 3-0 IN SOCON FIRST ROUND

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - The 18th ranked Furman men's soccer team defeated Wofford 3-0 in the opening match of the 2001 Gift of Life/Southern Conference Men's Soccer Tournament Thursday night at Patriots Point.

Wofford packed ten players in the defense and held Furman scoreless in the first half despite ten shots for the Paladins.

Furman's Patrick Tanner put the Paladins on the board at the 49:58 mark of the second half as he finished off a Kenneth Penn cross.

Recently crowned Southern Conference Player-of-the-Year John Barry Nusum showed again why he is a finalist for the Hermann and MAC Awards as he scored a spectacular goal at the 71:05 mark. Nusum collected a loose ball at midfield, took two dribbles and ripped a shot from 50 yards out that hit the crossbar and bounced in the goal.

The Paladins final goal came at the 72:03 mark as Anthony Esquivel finished a cross from Luke Barbour. Clint Dempsey was also credited with an assist on the play.

"We will take a win at this stage of the season any way it comes," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "Wofford played a good defensive match today, but we found a way to score three goals. John Barry's goal from near midfield was unbelievable."

Furman improves its Southern Conference unbeaten streak to 31 matches, dating back to the start of the 1999 season. The Paladins improve to 15-4 on the year, while Wofford finishes the season 4-13-1.

Furman will battle the winner of the Appalachian State-College of Charleston match Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
