FURMAN MEN'S SOCCER DOWNS WOFFORD 7-0 ON SENIOR NIGHT

GREENVILLE -- The 21st ranked Furman men's soccer team defeated Wofford 7-0 Wednesday night at Eugene Stone III Soccer Stadium as Hermann trophy and MAC Award finalist John Barry Nusum recorded his fifth career hat trick.

Nusum opened the scoring with a goal at the 11:44 mark as he turned his defender and scored from 15 yards out after receiving a pass from Sergei Raad. Raad then tallied his own goal at the 18:15 mark after winning a ball off a Vaughn Bethell pass. Furman added one more first half goal as Scott Hoch scored at the 41:33 mark off a Matt Goldsmith assist.

Nusum started the second half with two quick goals 38 seconds a part. Nusum scored from six yards out after receiving a Clint Hill pass at the 48:21 mark and then added his third goal at the 48:59 mark as he rifled a shot after collecting a deflected Clint Hill shot. Freshman Clint Dempsey extended the lead to 6-0 at the 85:48 mark after receiving an Anthony Esquivel pass.

Furman then scored one of its most bizarre goals of the season as starting senior goalkeeper Scott Blount entered the match as a field player in the final minutes of his last home regular season match. Blount collected a loose ball at midfield and outraced the Wofford defense to score his first career goal at the 89:10 mark.

"I thought a lot of different players performed well today," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "We have two important Southern Conference matches left this season and we will need to play well to win."

Furman improves to 12-4 on the year, 6-0 in the Southern Conference, while Wofford falls to 4-10-1 overall, 1-5-1 in league play. Furman returns to action Saturday with a key road match at Davidson at 4:30, while Wofford is at Davidson on November 7.
