No. 15 FURMAN ROLLS PAST VMI 7-2

GREENVILLE -- Fifteenth ranked Furman cruised to a 7-2 victory over VMI Friday night at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium as part of Furman's homecoming weekend.

Hermann Trophy Candidate John Barry Nusum scored twice and a total of six Paladins registered goals for Furman who led 5-0 before giving up two goals late in the first half.

Freshman Luke Barbour scored his first career goal at the 3:26 mark after receiving a cross from Matt Goldsmith. Sergei Raad and Clint Dempsey then combined for a nice give-and-go play as Raad scored off a Dempsey assist for his eighth goal of the season at the 6:00 minute mark.

Matt Goldsmith added a goal at the 10:49 mark, while John Barry Nusum scored twice in a three minute time span to put Furman ahead 5-0 after only 26 minutes of play. Nusum's first goal came on a header after receiving a header from Andy Chase, while his second was on a rebound off a Sergei Raad shot.

VMI scored twice late in the second half after Furman swapped goalkeepers and inserted freshman Alex Maslow. The Keydets first goal came at the 29:43 mark as Ryan Martin scored off an assist from Jonathan Rios. Rios then added his second assist of the night as Kyle Clark connected at the 40:53 mark.

Furman took the 5-2 lead into the intermission and extended that lead to 6-2 when Andy Chase knocked in a rebound of a John Barry Nusum shot. Furmanıs final goal of the night came at the 74:56 mark as Scott Hoch scored off assists from Sergei Raad and Clint Hill.

"I thought we came out on fire tonight," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "I was impressed with the play of a lot of different players and it was great to see so many players get goals."

Furman improves to 10-3 on the season and 5-0 in the Southern Conference. VMI falls to 4-7-1 overall, 2-2-1 in league play.

The Paladins take a weekıs break and will return to action next Friday night in Miami, Fla., against Michigan. The Paladins will also play Kentucky in that tournament, hosted by Florida International. VMI returns to action Tuesday at home against Marshall. The Paladins are currently ranked 15th in the latest Soccer America and College Soccer News national polls.
