FOURTH RANKED PALADINS TOP VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH

CLEMSON, SC Sergei Raad led the fourth ranked Furman men's soccer team with two goals over No. 20 Virginia Commonwealth at the Clemson/Nike Soccer Invitational tonight at Historic Riggs Field.

Raad's first goal came just under 22 minutes into the match. John Barry Nusum flicked a ball over the head of a VCU defender to a racing Raad who one-timed a low shot past goalkeeper Adam Mead.

Raad added to his tally less than five minutes into the second half as he maneuvered his way through three VCU defenders. Raad then drew out the goalkeeper and placed a low shot to the near post and into the back of the net.

Furman tacked on another goal with roughly five minutes remaining in the match as Vaughn Bethell connected with Andy Chase for Chase's third goal of the season. Bethell beat his defender to the end line and made a cross back towards the middle. Chase ran on the pass and one-timed it behind the keeper to give Furman a 3-0 lead.

"It was a good win for us against a good VCU team," said head coach Doug Allison. "I'm proud of the way our guys played in an extremely physical match."

Furman proved strong in a hard fought match that produced 46 fouls and six yellow cards.

Furman improves to 6-0 on the season, while VCU fell to 4-2-1. The Paladins will face Cal-Poly SLO on Sunday afternoon at 12:30 at Riggs Field.
