FIFTH RANKED PALADINS DOWN U.S. UNDER-17'S 2-0

GREENVILLE -- The fifth ranked Furman men's soccer team defeated the United States Under-17 National Team 2-0 in an exhibition match Friday night in front of 1,143 at Eugene E. Stone Soccer Stadium.

After a scoreless first half, Hermann Trophy Finalist John Barry Nusum broke the ice at the 65:08 mark off a give-and-go with freshman Clint Dempsey.

Sophomore McNeil Cronin, the reigning Southern Conference freshman-of-the-year, put the match away in the 88th minute with a goal off an assist from Andy Chase. Chase flicked the ball to a racing Cronin, who beat one defender and slid the ball past National Team keeper Ford Williams.

Furman outshot the National Team 13-4 on the evening.

"After a slow first half," said Furman head coach Doug Allison, "I thought we put together a nice match. It was good to be able to see our guys in a game situation for the first time this year. The Under-17 squad is a talented one and I think they will do well in the World Championships next month."

The U.S. Under-17 National Team is visiting the Upstate of South Carolina this weekend in preparation for the Under-17 FIFA World Youth Championships.

"I was impressed with Furman's squad," said United States Under-17 National Team coach John Ellinger. "Their organization in the back is very strong. I thought all three of their defenders played great. Offensively, Furman took advantage of its opportunities tonight. John Barry Nusum is one of the best collegiate players in the country. He has the ability to create something out of nothing."

Furman opens the regular season on Friday, August 31 at home against Belmont. The Paladins are currently ranked fifth in the nation in the Soccer America preseason poll.
