BIRMINGHAM, AL -- The 13th ranked Furman men's soccer team lost to eighth-ranked UAB on Sunday afternoon 2-1 in Birmingham, Alabama at West Campus Field.
Flavio Monteiro stole the ball off a goal kick and scored in the 74th minute to lift UAB to the 2-1 win.
Monteiro also assisted Rogerio Oliveira on the Blazers first goal at the 23:33 mark. Oliveira got the goal inside the left post from Monteiro's cross pass from the right side. That gave UAB a 1-0 halftime lead.
Furman's lone goal came from senior Matt Goldsmith on a shot from 15 yards out at the 53:03 mark. Sergei Radd had an assist on the goal.
The Blazers held on to win a very physical match that produced a combined 40 fouls, five yellow cards, and two red cards.
Furman fell to 9-2 on the season while UAB improved to 10-1.
The Paladins will return home to Eugene Stone Soccer III Stadium on Wednesday night to battle Upstate rival Clemson at 7:00.
