NUSUM, THREE OTHERS EARN PRESEASON ALL AMERICA HONORS

GREENVILLE, SC -- Furman senior forward John Barry Nusum is a consensus preseason first team All-America selection as he was named to the Collegesoccer.com and College Soccer News teams, while three other Paladins were selected as honorable mention All-Americans by Collegesoccer.com.

Nusum, a candidate for the Hermann and MAC Awards as the national player-of-the-year, is a two-time first team All-American. He is Furmanıs all-time leader in total points and set the single season points record a year ago with 48 points on 18 goals and 12 assists.

Also earning preseason All-America status are midfielder Matt Goldsmith and defenders McNeil Cronin and Jack Handy. Each were selected as honorable mention All Americans by Collegesoccer.com, while Goldsmith was a second team choice by College Soccer News.

Goldsmith, a senior from Roswell, Ga., has been a starter for the Paladins since he arrived on campus. He has received at least one All-America citation every year as a Paladin. Cronin is the reigning Southern Conference freshman-of-the-year as he was Furman's starting sweeper a year ago. Cronin, a free kick specialist, also led the nation in assists. Handy has been a key anchor of Furmanıs defense over the last three seasons and earns his first All America accolade with this award.

Furman concluded the 2000 campaign ranked 12th by Soccer America and 23rd by the NSCAA. Furman welcomes back ten starters from last yearıs squad that finished 17-4-2 and claimed the Southern Conference regular season and tournament titles. The Paladins have qualified for the NCAA Tournament each of the past two seasons, advancing to the quarterfinals in 1999 and falling in the first round in 2000.

Furman opens at home in a scrimmage against the U.S. Under-17 National Team on August 24 before opening the regular season at home against Belmont on August 31. Its 2001 schedule features home matches against Notre Dame, Clemson, and South Carolina as well as matches against Indiana, Kentucky, and Michigan.
