Furman's Nusum Named SoCon Player-of-the-Week

GREENVILLE Furman senior forward John Barry Nusum added another honor to his impressive resume as he was named Southern Conference Player-of-the-Week on Tuesday.

Nusum, a candidate for the 2001 Hermann Trophy, recorded his fourth career hat trick last weekend in a 5-0 victory over The Citadel. With his three goal performance, Nusum became Furman's all-time leader in career goals with 51, passing former standout Andrew Burr's ten-year mark of 50 career goals.

Nusum has already started piling up accolades this season. In addition to being named a finalist for the Hermann Trophy, which goes to the nation's top Division I player, he has scored six goals in four matches as he is currently second in the nation in points per match. He was the Offensive MVP of the Umbro/Spinx Furman Invitational two weeks ago and earned spots on the Soccer America and College Soccer News teams-of-the-week. He was a preseason All American selection by both College Soccer News and College Soccer Online and is listed as one of the five favorites for the Hermann Trophy by Soccer America.

Nusum is a two-time first team NSCAA All American and has tallied 51 goals and 35 assists over his career. He is only six assists shy of the Furman career assists record. Nusum will lead the fourth ranked Paladins against Virginia Commonwealth and Cal Poly this weekend at Clemson.

Nusum's SoCon Player-of-the-Week honor is the fourth of his career and it is the second player-of-the-week citation for Furman this season as Scott Hoch earned the award in week one.
