FIFTH RANKED PALADINS DOWN NO. 20 NOTRE DAME 3-2 IN OVERTIME IN SOCCER CLASSIC

GREENVILLE -- Hermann Trophy Candidate John Barry Nusum scored two goals, including the game-winner in the second overtime period to lift fifth ranked Furman to a 3-2 victory over 20th ranked Notre Dame in the Umbro/Spinx Furman Invitational at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium.

With the match even at 2-2 in the second overtime period, sophomore Sergei Raad beat his defender down on the right side of the field and crossed the ball to Nusum, who knocked in the game winner at the 108:59 mark.

Notre Dame got on the board first with a goal by Erich Bruan as he knocked in a loose ball in the box at the 13:41 mark.Furman scored the equalizer as Nusum found the back of the net at the 19:33 mark. The scoring play was set up as Ricardo Clark passed a ball to Clint Dempsey, who one-touched it to Nusum for the goal.

The match remained tied at 1-1 until the Irish took the lead at the 70:57 mark. Justin Detter finished the scoring play as he scored on a rebound of a Erich Braum shot. The Paladins trailed the Fighting Irish by a goal until Sergei Raad ripped a shot from 20 yards out at the 81:11 mark off an indirect kick after receiving a dishes from Matt Goldsmith and McNeil Cronin.

The match proceeded to overtime, where Furman goalkeeper Scott Blount saved the match for the Paladins at the 97:59 mark as he made a diving punch save at a shot by Felippo Chillemi to set the stage for Nusumšs game winner ten minutes later.

"That was one of the best soccer matches I have ever been a part of," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "John Barry Nusum showed why he is a national player-of-the-year candidate today and Scott Blount played terrific in goal. I couldnšt be prouder of our guys. To come from down a goal twice in one match shows a lot of poise. Notre Dame is a great team and this was an unbelievable match."

Furman improves to 2-0, while Notre Dame falls to 1-1.

The Umbro/Spinx Furman Invitational will continue Sunday as Furman battles FIU at 2:30 p.m. and Clemson takes on Notre Dame at Noon.
