NUSUM NAMED FINALIST FOR HERMANN TROPHY

GREENVILLE, SC -- Furman senior forward John Barry Nusum was named one of 13 finalists for the prestigious Hermann Trophy, given each year to the nation's top male and female collegiate soccer players.

Nusum is currently Furman's all-time leader in points with 122. He is second on the all-time charts in goals with 45 and third all-time in assists with 32. Nusum finished last season with 48 points, rewriting Furman's single season record en route to his second consecutive first team All-America selection as well as earning his third All-Southern Conference honor. He is also a member of the Bermuda national team.

Nusum is a 2001 preseason All-America selection by both collegesoccer.com and College Soccer News. He was a 1999 and 2000 NSCAA first team All-American, as well as a 1999 and 2000 collegesoccer.com All-American

"I'm extremely excited for John Barry," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "He is a great player and is truly deserving of this recognition."

The Hermann Trophy was named after Robert R. Hermann, the Chairman of the Executive Committee of the old North American Soccer League. It was first given to the nation's top male college soccer player in 1967 and the nation's top female player in 1988. The Hermann trophy will be presented this season by collegesoccer.com who will also closely follow the selection process on its website.

Nusum is the first men's soccer player at Furman to be nominated for a national player-of-the-year award. Nusum looks to become the fifth athlete in Furman's history to earn such an honor. Beth Daniel (1977 Broderick Award--womenıs golf), Brad Faxon (1982 Fred Haskins Award--menıs golf), Jeff Blankenship (1988 National Defensive Player-of-the-Year--I-AA football), and Louis Ivory (2000 Walter Payton Award--I-AA football) each received the nation's top honors in their respective sports for Furman.

The final 15-player ballot will be determined on October 1 after two additional finalists are named. Each Division I menıs soccer coach will have an opportunity to vote and the list will be narrowed down to three on December 1. The Hermann Trophy will be presented at the Men's College Cup on December 15 in Columbus, Ohio.
