FIFTH RANKED PALADINS DEFEAT FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL 4-1;
NUSUM NAMED OFFENSIVE MVP

GREENVILLE -- The fifth ranked Furman men's soccer team defeated Florida International 4-1 in the final match of the Umbro/Spinx Furman Invitational on Sunday afternoon at Eugene Stone III Soccer Stadium to improve to 3-0 on the year.

The Paladins jumped on the board early as sophomore Sergei Raad collected a cleared ball and chipped Golden Knight keeper Franklyn Rubio at the 8:50 mark of the first half.

Furman opened the second half with two goals in the first two minutes of the period. Hermann Trophy candidate John Barry Nusum scored his third goal of the season as he knocked an Asgeir Asgeirsson cross into the back of the net at the 45:48 mark. Sergei Raad was also credited with an assist as he dished to Asgeirsson to set up the play. Raad and Asgeirsson connected again 59 seconds later as Asgeirsson scored his first career goal after receiving a pass from Raad at the 46:47 mark.

Florida International scored its lone goal of the match as the 60:32 mark as Allen Handy's shot was deflected into the net.

Furman added an insurance goal at the 66:11 mark as Andy Chase scored off a Clint Dempsey assist.

John Barry Nusum was named the Offensive MVP of the Umbro/Spinx Furman Invitational, while Sergei Raad and Scott Blount also earned all-tournament team honors. Clemsonıs Nick Rivera was named defensive MVP. Also earning all-tournament team honors was Ian Fuller, Oskar Bringsved, and Dimelon Westfield from Clemson; Griffin Howard and Devon Prescot of Notre Dame; and Landy Mattison and Allen Handy from Florida International.

Furman improves to 3-0 on the season, Florida International falls to 0-3. In earlier action Sunday, Clemson defeated Notre Dame 4-0.

Furman returns to action next Friday against seventh ranked Indiana in the Butler Classic in Indianapolis.
