FURMAN HOLDS OFF DAVIDSON FOR 1-0 WIN

DAVIDSON, NC - The 21st ranked Furman men's soccer team defeated Davidson 1-0 on Saturday evening at Stephen B. Smith Field.

Furman and Davidson battled through 43 minutes of scoreless soccer. At the 42:56 mark, Furman's Clint Hill was fouled while trying to turn on his defender in the penalty box. Anthony Esquivel converted the penalty kick to give the Paladins a 1-0 lead that held until halftime.

Esquivel's goal proved enough for Furman as the Paladins fended off several Wildcat opportunities. At the 71:45 mark, Furman goalkeeper Scott Blount stopped a breakaway run from Davidson's Jon Tetirick. Blount also came up with a big save on a free kick right outside of the penalty box with under five minutes to play.

"I thought our defense played well tonight," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "We came up very big right there at the end."

With the win, the Paladins improved to 13-4 overall and 7-0 in the conference. Furman also clinched at least a share of the conference title, with the opportunity to win the league outright with a win over UNC Greensboro on November 10.
