FURMAN'S NUSUM BECOMES ALL-TIME LEADING SCORER AS

PALADINS DEFEAT THE CITADEL 5-0

GREENVILLE, SC -- Furman senion John Barry Nusum became Furman's all-time leading goal scorer this afternoon as he led the Paladins to a 5-0 win over The Citadel at Eugene Stone III Soccer Stadium. Nusum finished the day with six goals on the season and 51 career goals, passing 1990 graduate Andrew Burr's previous mark of 50.

Nusum, a 2001 Hermann Trophy candidate, recorded his fourth career hat-trick and notched an assist for a seven-point performance. Nusum has scored a hat-trick in each of Furman's last three meetings with the Citadel.

Nusum opened the scoring late in the first half as Patrick Tanner received a long throw-in from Vaughn Bethell. Tanner raced down the sideline and found Nusum open ahead to give the Paladins a 1-0 lead. Nusum teamed with Anthony Esquivel to assist Jack Handy on his first goal of the season just five minutes later.

Nusum added to the lead midway through the second half. He received a pass from Sergei Raad at the top of the penalty box, made a quick turn, and beat the Citadel goalkeeper with a shot to the upper right corner. Nusum record-breaking goal came less than 12 minutes later as he headed in a Ted Figard cross.

Figard closed out the scoring with a goal assisted by Scott Hoch and Clint Hill with five minutes remaining in the match. Furman dominated the match outshooting the Citadel 30-3 on the afternoon.

"It was great to finally get out there and play again," said head coach Doug Allison. "I'm extremely excited for John Barry and it's great that he got the record. He is truly an excellent goal-scorer and is very deserving."

Doug Allison notched his 99th career victory, leaving him one shy of 100 victories.

Furman will travel to the College of Charleston this Tuesday. The Paladins will return to the upstate to play in the Clemson/Nike Invitational next weekend with matches against Virginia Commonwealth and Cal-Poly.
