GREENVILLE -- The Stetson men's soccer team shocked sixth-ranked Furman Friday night in the Umbro/Spinx Furman Invitational with a 3-2 win over the previously unbeaten Paladins.
Stetson's Kjell Aasheim scored the game-winner for the Hatters at the 85:40 mark off an assist by Chris Fronk. After a scoreless first half, Stetson jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on the Paladins. Joe Fitzpatrick rifled an unassisted goal at the 48:03 mark and J.R. Casadonte scored on a direct kick to put the Hatters on top 2-0.
Trailing by two goals for the first time since October 25, 1998, the Paladins responded nicely as they started attacking Stetson. Furman senior Carl Junot pulled Furman to within one goal at the 62:02 mark on a penalty kick. Freshman Patrick Tanner then evened the score up at the 78:09 mark off a double assist from Vaughn Bethell and Clint Hill. Furman appeared to have regained the momentum and was looking for the game-winner until Aasheim put the Hatters back on top to stay.
The loss was the Paladins first home loss since October 7, 1998 and ended a 15-match home unbeaten streak. Furman entered the weekend ranked in the top ten in several polls including Soccer America (6th) and the NCAA Media Poll (5th).
Furman falls to 4-1 on the season and will host South Florida in the finale of the Umbro/Spinx Furman Invitational on Sunday at 3:15. Stetson earns their first win of the season and improves to 1-2 on the season.The Hatters play Coastal Carolina on Sunday at 1 p.m.
