SC -- Furman men's soccer standouts Matt Goldsmith and John Barry Nusum were
selected to the College Soccer Online preseason All America team on Friday.
Goldsmith was a first team selection as a defender, while Nusum was a second
team pick as a forward.
Matt Goldsmith, a junior from Roswell, Ga., is selected as a CSO preseason All American for the second straight year. Last season, Goldsmith was a second team preseason pick and matched that performance as a second team All American at the end of the season. He was also a second team NSCAA All American last year. This is the first time Goldsmith¹s has earned a first team All American citation of any kind.
John Barry Nusum, a junior from Devonshire, Bermuda, led the Paladins is scoring last season with 17 goals and 9 assists. He was 11th in the nation in total points with 43. Nusum was a first team All American by the NSCAA and a second team All American by CSO last year.
"I feel we are returning two of the best players in the country," said Furman head coach Doug Allison of Nusum and Goldsmith. "They have proven for two years that they are exceptional players and I expect even better things from them this year."
Furman
officially opens preseason training next Wednesday and is coming off its best
season in school history. The Paladins posted a 21-2-1 record, advanced to the
quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament, and finished the season ranked No. 3 by
Soccer America and No. 5 by the NSCAA.
Furman is ranked fifth in the nation in the NSCAA preseason national poll and was a unanimous pick among league coaches to win the Southern Conference title.
Furman opens the season September 1 against Georgia State in Conway, S.C.
