FURMAN BLANKS DAVIDSON 2-0; CLINCHES SOCON TITLE

GREENVILLE -- The 15th ranked Furman men's soccer team shutout Davidson 2-0 Saturday night in front of 2,238 fans at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium to clinch its third straight Southern Conference title.

Furman is guaranteed the No. 1 seed at the conference tournament and at least a share of the regular season title with one match to play as Furman now has a one game lead over Davidson. The Paladins travel to face last place VMI in its SoCon finale next weekend. Furmanšs title marks its tenth in the last 11 years.

Furman got on the board in the first half as John Barry Nusum finished a nice play at the 21:52 mark. The scoring play began as Matt Goldsmith ripped a shot just wide of the goal. Patrick Tanner saved it from going out of bounds and crossed it back in front of the goal to Nusum, who finished the play.

Furman held the 1-0 lead through the early part of the second half when Patrick Tanner scored on a corner kick play. McNeil Cronin sent a corner kick in to John Barry Nusum, who headed it off the crossbar to Tanner, who finished the play.

"One of our goals at the beginning of the year is to win the Southern Conference title," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "This is the third year in a row that we have accomplished that goal and I am pleased with that. We have a big match against Clemson on Wednesday to get ready for now."

Furman improves to 13-2-1 on the year, 7-0 in the Southern Conference. Davidson falls to 10-5-1, 6-1 in league play. Furman travels to face Clemson on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Paladins are ranked 15th in the latest Soccer America poll.
