CLEMSON -- The 11th ranked Furman men's soccer team lost 2-0 to eighth ranked Clemson Wednesday night at Riggs Field.
The first half ended in a scoreless tie in which Furman's Patrick Tanner had the match's best opportunity as his shot from 18 yards out hit the cross bar and John Barry Nusum's follow shot sailed over the net.
Clemson controlled the second half as they went up by one goal and one player at the 47:13 mark. With a flurry of activity in front of the goal, Furman's Kenneth Penn was called for a deliberate hand ball in the box, sending him out with a red card and giving Clemson's Mark Lisi a penalty kick. Lisi converted on the kick, giving Clemson the 1-0 lead.
Clemson then extended their lead to 2-0 as Oguchi Onyewu put an awkward shot past Furman keeper Scott Blount after a flurry of activity in front of the net. With Furman keeper Scott Blount out of the goal after chasing a loose ball, Clemson's Ian Fuller took a shot that was back saved by Furman sweeper McNeil Cronin. Clemson's Kenneth Cutler retreived the cleared ball after the back save and passed to Onyewa, who shot past Blount.
"To go a man down and a goal down at the same time makes it tough," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "I am proud of our guys, though, we played hard until the end. They are a good team and we are a good team and I hope both teams make it to the playoffs."
Furman falls to 13-3-1 on the season, while Clemson improves to 11-3-1.
Furman will conclude its 2000 regular season Sunday at VMI. The Paladins are the 2000 Southern Conference regular season champions and will open the SoCon Tournament
