CLEMSON -- The ninth ranked Furman men's soccer team defeated 16th ranked Brown 2-0 Sunday afternoon in the Clemson/Nike Invitational.
Furman claimed two wins over the weekend over nationally ranked teams as the Paladins downed 20th ranked Cal. State Fullerton 2-1 on Friday.
After receving a Sergei Raad pass, defender Jack Handy sent a cross into the mouth of the goal, where the ball deflected off Brown's Cory Gibbs and into the goal to give Furman the 1-0 lead at the 12:21 mark.. Under NCAA statistics regulations, the goal was credited to Handy, his second of the year.
Furman extended their lead to 2-0 in the second half as Patrick Tanner knocked in a McNeil Cronin cross after Brown keeper Matthew Cross was not able to get more than a hand on the cross.
"This was a great weekend of soccer for us," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "To come away with two wins over these nationally ranked, out of region teams will help us later in the season."
With the win, Furman imrpoves to 9-1 on the season. Brown fell to 4-3-1. Furman is ranked 9th in the nation in the Soccer America poll and 13th in the NCAA Division I Media poll.
Furman travels to face The Citadel on Thursday at 7 p.m. and will host fellow 1999 NCAA quarterfinalists UAB on Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
