FURMAN BLANKS APPALACHIAN STATE 5-0 IN MEN'S SOCCER

GREENVILLE -- The 14th ranked Furman men's soccer team shutout Appalachian State 5-0 Wednesday night at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium.

The Paladins jumped off to a quick lead as John Barry Nusum scored twice in the first 16 minutes. Nusumıs first goal came at the 4:04 mark off assists from Clint Hill and Moffat Oduor. He scored his second goal at the 15:50 off an assist from McNeil Cronin in which in chipped the ball over the charging Mountaineer goalkeeper.

Vaughn Bethell ripped a goal to the opposite side net from 20 yards out to extend Furmanıs lead to 3-0 at the 29:06 mark. Jody Keelingıs goal at 32:21 gave Furman a 4-0 halftime advantage.

Clint Hill knocked in a loose ball in the box at 63:43 to finish off the Paladin attack.

"It is always good to get off to a quick start like we did today," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "We got a chance to see a lot of different players compete today and I think they did well."

Nusum leads the team with seven goals and five assists on the year. This was the second straight match in which he scored Furmanıs first two goals in the matchıs opening 20 minutes.

Furman improves to 6-1 on the season, 2-0 in the Southern Conference. Appalachian State falls to 3-4, 0-1 in league play. Furman is ranked 14th in the nation by Soccer America, 12th in the NCAA Division I Media Poll, and 17th in the Soccer Times poll.

The Paladins will face College of Charleston Saturday night at 7 p.m. at home.
