GREENVILLE, SC -- All Americans John Barry Nusum and Matt Goldsmith were joined by senior Carl Junot and freshman McNeil Cronin as Furman reprentatives on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All South team released this week.
Furman's four citations match North Carolina and Clemson's four picks as the most of any team in the South Region. The Southern Conference placed 12 players on the three teams, the most of any league. The ACC was the next closest with 11 players selection.
Nusum paced the Paladin contingent as he was a first team selection for the second straight year. Goldsmith earned second team honors with senior Capatin Carl Junot, while freshman sweeper McNeil Cronin was a third team choice.
Junior forward John Barry Nusum broke the Furman single season point record as he registered 48 points on 18 goals and 12 assists in 2000. Though only a junior, Nusum became Furmanıs all-time leader in career points this season with 122 points as he has scored 45 goals and recorded 32 assists over his three year career. One of the most exciting players in the nation, Nusum finished fifth in the nation in points.
Junior defender/midfielder Matt Goldsmith is a former member of the U.S. Under 20 National Team. Goldsmith finished the year with four goals and seven assists. He earned NSCAA All-South honors for the second straight season as he was a first team choice a year ago.
Senior captain Carl Junot enjoyed his best individual campaign in 2000. A team leader, Junot registered four goals and eight assists on the year as a midfielder. Over Junotıs four years, Furman produced more wins (68) than in any other four year time span in the programıs history.
Freshman McNeil Cronin excelled as Furmanıs sweeper during the 2000 campaign despite playing a position normally reserved for upperclassmen. Cronin, the Southern Conference freshman-of-the-year, also added an offensive punch as he led the nation with 15 assists. Cronin was the only freshman to receive All-South honors on any of the three teams.
Furman concluded the 2000 season with a 17-4-2 record and earned its second straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The Paladins also won the Southern Conference regular season and tournament titles.
