FURMAN MEN'S SOCCER PLACES SEVEN PLAYERS ON ALL-CONFERENCE TEAM;

MCNEIL CRONIN NAMED FRESHMAN-OF-THE-YEAR

GREENVILLE -- The Furman men's soccer team placed seven players on the 2000 All-Southern Conference team, including five first team citations on Wednesday. Freshman sweeper McNeil Cronin was named freshman-of-the-year and Furman head coach Doug Allison was selected as one of three co-coaches-of-the-year.

Cronin, a freshman from Winston-Salem, N.C., anchored Furman's defense as its sweeper. In addition, he leads Furman in assists with ten on the season. Cronin was also a first team All-Southern Conference pick.

"McNeil stepped in and has done a great job as our sweeper this season," said Furman head coach Doug Allison."That is not an easy position for a freshman to play and McNeil has played like a veteran."

Joining Cronin as first team All Southern Conference selections are All American's John Barry Nusum and Matt Goldsmith, along with Scott Blount and Carl Junot.

Nusum, a first team All American last season, is making his third appearance as an all-conference selection and it is his second first team citation. Nusum, a junior from Devonshire, Bermuda, leads the team with 13 goals and 10 assists for 36 points this season. Goldsmith, also a consensus All American last season, makes his third straight appearance as a first team All Southern Conference member. Goldsmith, a junior from Roswell, Ga., has scored three goals and recorded six assists on the season.

Senior captain Carl Junot is a first team pick for the first time in his career after being a second team selection as a freshman. Junot, a senior from San Antonio, Texas, has led the Paladins as a center midfielder and has four goals and six assists. Wrapping up Furman's first team contingent is goalkeeper Scott Blount. Blount, a junior from Brentwood, Tenn., leads the conference with a 0.83 goals against average.

Furman's Patrick Tanner and Jack Handy were each selected to the second team. Tanner, a freshman from Norman, Oklahoma, is second on the team in goals as he has scored nine goals on the year. Handy, a junior from Lilburn, Ga., has been one of Furman¹s top defenders and has recorded two goals and two assist on the season.
