GREENVILLE, SC -- Furman men's soccer standouts John Barry Nusum and Matt Goldsmith were named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All America team for the second straight season on Friday as Nusum was a first team selection and Goldsmith earned third team honors.
Junior forward John Barry Nusum broke the Furman single season point record as he registered 48 points on 18 goals and 12 assists in 2000. Though only a junior, Nusum became Furmanšs all-time leader in career points this season with 122 points as he has scored 45 goals and recorded 32 assists over his three year career.
One of the most exciting players in the nation, Nusum finished fifth in the nation in points. He is honored as one of the top four forwards in the nation with this award. Nusum is Furmanšs second two-time first team All American as Pete Santora accomplished the feat in 1996 and 1997.
Junior defender/midfielder Matt Goldsmith adds third team All-America honors to an already impressive collegiate resume. Goldsmith, a former member of the U.S. Under 20 National Team, was a second team NSCAA All American a year ago and has been recognized as an All-American four times by two different organizations. Goldsmith finished the year with four goals and seven assists.
Furman concluded the 2000 season with a 17-4-2 record and earned its second straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The Paladins also won the Southern Conference regular season and tournament titles.
