FURMAN SOCCER BLASTS WOFFORD 7-1
GREENVILLE -- The 13th-ranked Furman men's soccer team defeated Wofford 7-1 Wednesday night on the strength of five first half goals at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium. Furman's leading scorer John Barry Nusum set the tone for the match as he scored his eighth goal of the season 16 seconds into the match off an Andy Foy assist. The goal marked the quickest goal in Furman soccer history and is the sixth quickest goal in NCAA Division I history. Stephen Rodriguez scored his first goal of the season at the 20:24 mark to put the Paladins on top 2-0. Ryan Conway then scored two goals in a three minute time span to increase the Furman lead to 4-0. Conway's first goal came at the 27:05 mark off a John Barry Nusum assist, while his second was a penalty kick at the 30:13 mark. The penalty kick was set up when Carl Junot was fouled in the box. Furman increased the lead to 5-0 before halftime as Geno Mayes stole the ball from Terrier keeper Daniel Wilson. All ten Furman field starters took shots in the first half as Furman outshot the Terriers 24-1 in the opening half. In the second half, a number of reserves earned significant playing time. Freshman Anthony Esquivel scored off a an assist from his high school teammate Matt Foxhall at the 51:32 mark of the second half. Wofford got on the board with a Shane Kerr goal at the 59:17 mark to cut Furman's lead to 6-1. The match's final goal came as Daniel Alvarez knocked in his first goal of the season off assists from Alex Pereira and goalkeeper Will Chaple. "I was glad to see several guys get a chance to play tonight," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "I saw a lot of potential in several freshman and I was excited to see us finish our chances in the first half." Furman improves to 8-1-1 overall, 2-0 in the Southern Conference. Wofford falls to 1-9, 0-4 in the Southern Conference. The Paladins are ranked 13th in both the NSCAA and Soccer Times polls, while they are 17th in Soccer America. The Paladins will host The Citadel Friday at 7 p.m. at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium.
