FURMAN MEN'S SOCCER TRAVELS TO UCONN FOR QUARTERFINALS

GREENVILLE, SC -- The Furman-Connecticut men's soccer quarterfinal match has been scheduled for Noon Sunday in Storrs, Conn. The winner will advance to the Men's College Cup at Charlotte's Ericsson Stadium to face the winner of the Santa Clara-UAB quarterfinal match.

The Paladins, 21-1-1, defeated Wake Forest 4-0 on the road in the second round and downed North Carolina 2-1 at home in double overtime in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Junior forward Carl Junot has scored two goals and recorded two assists in the tournament, while John Barry Nusum has two goals and an assist.

Connecticut is the tournament's No. 4 seed and advanced to the quarterfinals with a 2-1 quadruple overtime win over Hartford in the first round and a 3-0 shutout of Yale last weekend. UConn enters the match with an 18-4 record and have won 11 matches in a row. The Huskies are ranked seventh in the final Soccer America poll and sixth in the final NSCAA poll. Furman finished third in Soccer America and fifth in the NSCAA listing.

Furman won the Southern Conference championship and defeated Radford 1-0 in a play-in game to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Furman has the nation's best record and is currently riding the nation's longest winning streak as the Paladins have won 14 matches in a row. Furman is the only 20-win team in the country.

This will be the first ever meeting between the Paladins and the Huskies. Furman will be making its first ever quarterfinal appearance as the Paladins are making its third NCAA Tournament appearance. UConn is making its 20th tournament appearance, but only its second this decade. The Huskies advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time since 1983 when they advanced to the final four.

"This has been an incredible season thus far," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "We plan to continue to play well and hopefully earn a trip to Charlotte. I am really proud of the way our guys have played when it has really counted this season."

In other quarterfinal matches, Santa Clara is at UAB, UCLA travels to Virginia, and Indiana hosts Penn State in a rematch of the Big Ten Championship.
