Furman Edges UAB 1-0 in Overtime to Win UAB Nike Classic

Birmingham, AL - Furman sophomore Matt Goldsmith scored an overtime goal to propel the Furman men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over UAB as the Paladins won the UAB Nike Classic.

Sophomore goalkeeper Scott Blount, making only his seventh start in his collegiate career, collected Tournament MVP honors as he made a number of remarkable saves. Furman's Ryan Conway was flagged with a red card at the 65:23 mark, thus forcing Furman to play a man down the rest of the match. The defense, led by Blount and fellow all-tournament team selections John Bradford and Matt Goldsmith stepped up and secured the shutout and the victory.

Goldsmith, a member of the U.S. Under-20 National Team and a College Soccer Weekly Preseason All-American, scored the game-winner off assists from John Bradford and Carl Junot.

Furman improves to 2-0 on the season and UAB falls to 0-2.

John Barry Nusum, who scored both goals in Furman's 2-1 win over South Florida on Friday was also named to the all-tournament team.
