FURMAN'S BLOUNT, TURNER NAMED SOCON PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
GREENVILLE, SC -- Furman University soccer players Scott Blount and Melissa Turner were named Southern Conference players-of-the-week on Tuesday.
Blount, a sophomore goalkeeper from Nashville, Tenn., was named MVP of the UAB/Nike Classic last weekend as he notched 17 saves while guiding Furman to two wins. In the Paladins' first match, Blount made a remarkable save in the match's final minute to preserve a 2-1 victory over 18th ranked South Florida. In the Paladins' second match, Blount recorded a shutout as Furman downed UAB 1-0 in overtime. Amazingly, Furman played the last 35 minutes down a player thanks to a red card, causing the Paladins' to be even more on the defensive.
Turner, a sophomore from Marietta, Ga., was named MVP of the Jacksonville/Legends Tournament after scoring two goals, including the overtime game-winner, and notching one assist in Furman's 3-2 overtime victory over Jacksonville. A defensive midfielder, Turner was also in charge of marking Jacksonville's top player, 1998 national assist leader Marit Foss.
The Furman men's soccer team, off to a 2-0 start, is ranked 17th in the nation by the NSCAA and 19th by Soccer America. The Paladins are also ranked third in the NSCAA South Region Poll.
The Furman women's soccer team, off to a 3-0 start, is ranked seventh in the Southeast Region by Soccer Buzz and eighth by the NSCAA. | ||
