FURMAN SOCCER DOWNS PRESBYTERIAN 5-1 IN SCRIMMAGE
GREENVILLE -- The Furman men's soccer team defeated Presbyterian 5-1 in a scrimmage Wednesday night at Eugene Stone Soccer Stadium.
Sophomore John Barry Nusum, last season's leading scorer, put Furman on the board with two goals in the first 18 minutes of play. His first came just 2:16 into the match as he shot a Paul Leese pass past Blue Hose keeper Andy Pfaffl. The second goal came on a header off a John Bradford cross at the 17:32 mark.
Presbyterian opened the second half scoring with a Daniel Harris direct kick to pull the Blue Hose to within 2-1, but three Furman freshman scored goals in a 15 minute time span to put the match out of reach. Freshmen Clint Hill, Anthony Esquivel, and Jody Keeling each scored second half goals.
"It was nice to see us play another squad," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "John Barry Nusum did a fantastic job and our freshmen came on strong in the second half. We have a long way to go though until we start playing the way we want to be playing."
Furman has one more tune-up before the regular season begins, a Saturday afternoon matchup with Coastal Carolina in Conway, S.C. The Paladins open the regular season against 18th ranked South Florida in Birmingham, Ala., as part of the UAB Nike Classic.
