FURMAN'S GOLDSMITH SELECTED AS PRESEASON ALL AMERICAN

GREENVILLE -- Furman men's soccer standout Matt Goldsmith has been selected as a preseason second team All-American by College Soccer Weekly.

Goldsmith was an honorable mention College Soccer Weekly All American last season and was the 1998 Southern Conference freshman-of-the-year.

Goldsmith is a member of the United States Under-20 national team. He traveled to Nigeria in April to compete in the 1999 FIFA World Youth Championships. A starter at outside midfield in two matches, Goldsmith rejoined the Paladin squad when preseason training began last week.

"Matt certainly deserves this recognition," said Furman head coach Doug Allison. "It is an honor for our program. After representing his country last April, I think Matt has proven that he is one of the top players in the nation. Now we'll just hope that he is a first team selection at the end of the season."

Goldsmith entered the Paladin program a year ago with high expectations as he was selected as the top midfielder in the nation by Parade Magazine. He was a two-time first team Parade All-American in high school.

Former Paladin standout Pete Santora was a first team NSCAA All-American in 1997 and 1998, but was never a preseason All American.
